My current position in the Health and Wellness department in a large regional organization in the Northwest Territories allows me to be an active health promoter as well as a researcher. My work involves collaborating with national and local organizations involved in Inuit health and wellness and working with local communities.
The Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT) and Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NWTHSSA) are my go-to resources for health promotion-related materials to share with local communities that I work with. They inform my understanding of both regional and provincial health systems. A huge part of my role is traveling to communities and Public Health Advisories provide us with timely health announcements and possible restrictions in order to ensure a safe travel plan without compromising the safety of the local residents. Also, as a southerner and a recent resident of NWT, it is important to understand the local realities in the communities that I am working with. As part of my hiring process, I needed to take the time to understand the historical health context of each of the communities and understand their health priorities. Our current project makes good use of the annual health reports which outline the existing health priorities and give a snapshot of the health and wellness of the communities.
